Default Cam Question

I asked the question on the general forum, and should have asked it here. I am looking to by a set of Profiler heads soon. Everyone here raves about the Comp Cams 268H and was wondering if this would be a good cam, or should I go a bit bigger to utilize the extra air flow that the Profilers provide? I want a bit choppy lobe, with good low end to mid range HP/Tq. I currently have an Eddy 600 cfm carb and an Eddy ESP intake. This is a budget (as money comes) build. Ultimately I want to do an LS swap and yet use this engine in a future Rat Rod. Any ideas on what power increase i should see. I will be adding a 2500-2800 stall as well. Thanks!

I think you would be happier with the 268 cam. The stock compression ratio on the 78 will not support any bigger. Even with a converter, it will be lazy until you get well past 3000 rpm and idle will be difficult to hold below 750rpm with the low compression. IMHO

My compression would be boosted to 9:5.1 with 64cc heads, which is what I will be buying. Sorry if I did not specify.

I believe I have 3.08 currently. I do plan on bumping up to 3.55 or 3.73, but that will come later when I add the 200 R4.

This leaves you in a bit of a tough spot, as your operating range will change quite a bit...and so the cam choice will be VERY different.

How do you use the car? Just street? Autocross or drag?

Ultimately Street/Strip. Currently, I put around town and take it to local shows. Since it is an Auto, I wouldn't be autocrossing it. I wouldn't mind taking it to the track but I understand I am a little ways away from that. I am shooting for 350 to 400 HP.

I run a similar cam, Lunati 268 Voodoo, in a 1968 327. I have the same Edelbrock EPS intake, but a holley street avenger 670 carb. I love the cam and it sounds pretty good too.

Thanks Mike! I will be giving Summit a call and see what they suggest as well. I appreciate everyone's expertise. I was just wondering because I see posts that the 268H is good to use for stock heads, yet it is still suggested for aftermarket heads as well. Which I would have thought would need a bigger cam to utilize the extra air flow.

Better heads need less cam. If heads flow more air quicker than that means they need less time. Duration is time.

I guess I can understand that. Does that cam make the car sound like a cam'd car? I love the lobby sound, but I want the performance too. I guess I want it all, lol.

When you say this, do you mean for the outcome? Say power at a given rpm range?

Correct. 95% of the stuff I recam has to much cam in it to begin with. To many are afraid of not hitting their HP goals so they put a bigger cam in the engine.

I just recammed a 572CID BBC with a set of Chiefs on it. 15 to 1 Engine. My cam was .130 smaller on lift, 6 degrees less on Lobe Sep and around 6 or 7 degrees smaller on duration. 20HP and 20#/ft torque average gain with smaller cam. 7200 rpm peak.

I won't recommend a flat tappet. If your willing to go Roller use this one with a 2400 stall. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hr...make/chevrolet

Thanks Mako! I like they way that looks. I steered away from rollers because i didn't know what would be involved in the retro fit. I think I may make the plunge when the time comes. Any ideas on the power i can expect with the Profilers (210cc, 64 cc), this cam, and 2400 stall? I currently have true duals, but will be going with the OBX side exhaust. And i am converting to a serpentine system within the next week or so. I do need to do something soon. Bubba installed a cam that is too big for my stock heads. The car shakes at stop lights pertty bad.
