Default Hard shifting from neutral to drive

1982 CE.
Transmission shifts hard when putting into drive.
Transmission fluid looks clear. Not sure if any work has been done to the transmission.
Idle RPM - 800
Mileage - 85k

Check for slack in the drivetrain- u-joints, rear diff support, trans mount- even the half shafts. It seems that 800 is a bit high, but it's not something you can adjust IIRC. Idle speed should be on the emissions label under the hood or in the service manual.

TimAT,
Thanks for the feedback.
There is no clunking or noise when shifting. When I shift into drive the rear ends squats down.
When I checked the differential, driveshaft and half shafts all were tight.
I will check the idle RPM in the service manual.

the rear end will squat, if no noises, all is well back there, idle seems a tad high
