Default Oil pump

Has anyone replaced an oil pump on an L48 and how big a job is it?

Drop the steering. Drain the oil. Remove the oil pan. One bolt to remove oil pump. One bolt to install new oil pump. Clean gasket mating surfaces on pan and block. Install new gaskets. Install pan. Re-attach steering.

You will also have to install an oil pick up tube to the oil pump. You'll need to buy or fabricate a tool to do this. I would not recommend trying to re-use the old one.

If you go with a high volume pump you will need to replace the oil pump driveshaft as well.

I highly reccomend the fel-pro one piece oil pan gasket set. Its expensive but makes the job fool proof and relativley painless.

submerse the pickup in some clean oil, and spin the driveshaft by hand until oil flows from outlet. if you pour some oil in the pump first, this should not too take long. if you don't prime the pump, you could damage engine bearings if they don't get any oil for a few seconds. good luck.

Any tips on how to prime?

The pan will clear the exhaust? My 79 sure looks like you have to drop the exhaust to get the pan off.

Isn't that 1 piece gasket for the later blocks ('86 + 1 piece rear main seal) I can't find that gasket for the older 2 piece rear main seal motor

I didn't have any trouble clearing the exhaust, but I have duals. The trick is clearing the steering. Someone once posted that a certain position (I don't remember the exact position) of the balancer allows more room between the steering and crankshaft for removing the pan.
