Default 68 Starter Wiring

I have something funny going on at my starter. According to the wiring diagram you have a purple solenoid wire, yellow solenoid wire, a brown fusible link hot wire, the battery cable, and then the black ground from the windshield wiper motor. I connected the battery cable and brown power wire to the main terminal solenoid wires and connected the black ground to the ground cable to frame and the car would not start. I connected the black ground to the main terminal and it will start. With the black wire connected and the brown fusible link disconnected it starts also? Trying to figure out why it will not start when wired per the diagram and connected a ground to the positive terminal makes it start. The wiper motor is disconnected right now and will be getting it connected up and tested soon.

Default Hi and welcome again!

The large black should come from the battery positive and connect to the top solenoid terminal.
The brown also connects to the same terminal and brings power to the fuse box.
The small purple (connects to the terminal closest to the block, and only has power with the key in start.
The yellow only gets power with the key in start.
The small black is the wiper and fan ground.

I had to unwrap my '68 firewall wiring harness....Bubba had splice some wires together to eliminate the faulty neutral start-safety switch....

which caused me all kinds of problems until I corrected the "splices" and replaced the neutral-start safety switch....

That might not be your problem, but I wanted to let you know that it's possible.

Check that you have a good solid ground at the battery cable under the bat box, to the frame, take it apart and polish the steel frame and cable tab, then secure snug and water proof with RTV all over it.....

under the right side down lo, you will find a ~6" battery cable connected from the engine block to the frame, on MY car it goes from inside the frame horn to the engine block at the engine mount, rear bolt, some guys say it goes to another point further back on the block, but it does NOT go to a oil pan bolt.... clean and polish all those spots, resecure and RTV.....

if no go we have to get into it, what you also need do is take that thin black wire to a secure ground, it is the ground for the wiper & blower motor, as well as the fan speed relay on/near the fender....

other than that, all the above sounds correct to me....

I replaced the main ground cable to the battery, because it was getting hot, polished the frame connection point, then coated it with silicone spray. I also replaced the ground cable that goes from the motor mount/frame to the ground lug at the rear of the starter which is connected to the block via the starter support bracket, cleaning the connection points and coating with silicone spray. The one thing I do wonder is if the wiring is different since I have the factory TI ignition and not points?

Luckily Bubba has not touched this car and it is all original. That being said does not mean a wire can't be faulty or another bad connection somewhere.

Thanks Pete and this is what my diagram shows also. I replaced the old starter because the Bendix was bad and wired it back up the way it was but when I started looking at the diagram is when I noticed the ground for the wiper motor was connected to the positive terminal. I wired it as it should be and it would not start. So who knows other than breaking out the test light and try to track each wire.
