Default Coolant temperature question:

This weekend was pretty hot and I drove my 68' quite a bit. In slow traffic the temperature stayed around 200. However - when driving at the Highway at 2500 RPM - the temperature went up to 215 degrees... I wonder if this is too hot... My sensor is in the intake on the opposite side of the thermostat. I always thought that the temperature in the intake is approx. 10 - 15 degrees higher than in the heads.... However - I recently read an article in the current CHP where they measured coolant temperature in the heads and intake and the temperature in the intake was lower than in the heads.... I wonder how this is possible
Another thing that I noticed that 215 degrees in the intake were not enough to fill my overflow tank - which actually stayed empty.. BTW - I have a 15lbs radiator cap...

Hmmmm......here in TX where 100-degree heat is quite common, 215 would be very 'normal'.....as long as you're under 230, I wouldn't worry too much.

Another thing is to check the coolant bottle after 5-min. of shuting off the car.... if you check it right away there won't be anything, but as the car sets without the fan running, it'll get hotter before cooling off. :yesnod:

Well - we don't get to the 100's here in South FL but we were in the low 90's on the weekend with high humidity (feels like well above 100). The temperature with my old engine was around 190 - 195 in extreme heat...
However - the old engine was running rich and my new engine is running lean...

Olivier

I will hit the 215 in the high 90's, high humidity, slow traffic for miles type of driving. Gets there and stops. Will start down when I have long enough open driving. Just drive nice and easy when it gets to that level. So, for July and August and maybe part of September, I have to behave myself on those days.

Thank goodness the A/C works! Went to a low temp fan switch a year ago. Helped A/C wonders.

Well - I have no A/C.... I would probably run 230+ with A/C...
