Difference between Flowmaster 40's and Flowmaster 50's
I just ordered the flowmaster 50 series mufflers for my 82. I heard the 40 series is "louder", so I opted for the 50 series. Is there a huge difference between the two in the way they sound? Performance? It will be interesting to hear all my mods come to life at the same time. I'm sure it will be like night and day. Cam, headers, mufflers, etc... The stock 82 is just so tame....
Re: Difference between Flowmaster 40's and Flowmaster 50's (Ryan77)
Keep in mind that Flowmasters act differently on our beloved C3's than they do on other cars. Since we don't have a tailpipe after the muffler, you'll get a louder exhaust than with a traditional undercar exhaust system that has a long tailpipe after the muffler. I've compared 72greg's Flowmaster 50's to a '57 Chevy with Flowmaster 40's and the Vette was louder.

Put 40's on mine. They are loud, but the compliments are worth it. Everyone says how healthy the engine sounds. I put a speaker box in the back to hear the stereo better, and I have gotten used to it. It is a little annoying at first.
Re: Difference between Flowmaster 40's and Flowmaster 50's (Jman)
I had read somewhere that the 50 series, although quieter, flow a little better than the 40 series. Regardless, though, the 40 series would be for me.
Re: Difference between Flowmaster 40's and Flowmaster 50's (Chris81)
I agonized over this for a couple of weeks, I wanted the flow but not so much the noise , I ended up ordering the dynomax delta flow welded mufflers because (according to dynomax) they flow much better than the flowmasters, I'll let you know if I can still hear my radio
Re: Difference between Flowmaster 40's and Flowmaster 50's (Jman)
The 50's have an additional chamber (3 chamber) compared to the 40's (2 chamber), they still flow well but are on the quieter side. The 40's are more "race" oriented and flow better then the 50's.
But on a "normal" street car at what point are going to notice the flow difference? You probably won't - so unless you think you'll really like the louder exhaust, stick with the 50 series.
Re: Difference between Flowmaster 40's and Flowmaster 50's (Jman)
Got 40's on my wimpy 350 and when I start it people can't help but look. I think my vette sounds like a muscle with them. They can be raspy/tinny at times but only for a few seconds then it's back to the smooth deep sound.
Re: Difference between Flowmaster 40's and Flowmaster 50's (Fevre)
Ahhh, I love this subject. Anyone actually heard the difference between the 40's and 40's Delta Flow? I'm going back and forth between the two and still haven't made up my mind. I've called the technical assistance line at Flowmaster and the technician who helped me said that she was very familiar with all the Flowmaster lines, and there was no noticable difference to the exterior sound between the 40's and the 40's Delta Flow. I find that hard to believe. I'm willing to sacrifice a little rumble to reduce interior resonance, but I don't want to lose to much rumble.
Re: Difference between Flowmaster 40's and Flowmaster 50's (Fevre)
Try one of each. There was a thread started about mixing mufflers to produce diff sounds/pitches. I think it was started by Steve Gruber.
Yes, I remember the thread and if I remember correctly, some people brought up the point that different rates of flow would cause uneven pressure which would not be good for the engine. The mere fact that this makes some sense to me is enough for me to not try it, especially if I'd be using my Vette as a guinea pig. No thanks. I'll pass.
Re: Difference between Flowmaster 40's and Flowmaster 50's (Leos 81)
I believe most agreed that if the flow rates where equal, then there would be no problem. But you do have to know the flow rates. Not sure I would do it on my vette either since you would not be able to hear in until you had them hooked up.
Re: Difference between Flowmaster 40's and Flowmaster 50's (Fevre)
hey, i resemble that remark
i found one exhaust pipe was pulled against the crossmmber by a too tight hanger. i ovaled the hole, dropped it by 1/4" .
i saw c5 bulletin showing how to fix resonance the same way so i tried it.
mixing similar mufflers gives better sounds, just change 1 at a time and see for yourself.
Re: Difference between Flowmaster 40's and Flowmaster 50's (Matt Gruber)
At least I didn't call you Hans Gruber from 'Die Hard'. I scanned all the posts at the main page and you name was not up so I took a shot, a least it wasn't like the :boxing we traded before. :p:
I sometimes get a fired up so we can just let that other stuff rest.
Re: Difference between Flowmaster 40's and Flowmaster 50's (Leos 81)
I've heard the 40 delta flow and regular 40's next to each other. There is a noticeable difference but also it was two completely different cars. My vette and a 79 camaro with a 383. My brother (79 camaro) actually said he likes the sound of my 40 series delta flows than his regular 40's. But I also have an H pipe and the mufflers on a vette are right at the end of the car where as a camaro they are about mid way down.
