Default Locked door.

G'day,

One of my friends has a '70 big block auto. We were at a car show today and when he put the key in the door lock, it would not unlock. The pass side was OK, but we could not turn more than a few degrees the interior door lock **** on the driver's door. He needs to find out how to open the door and I knew that someone here could help.

The outer door handle feels like it is disconnected from the inner linkages. Nothing we did would make it unlock.

Thanks in advance.

Regards from Down Under.

There's a tab on the lock mechanism that can be pressed with a long screwdriver. It will open the door latch.

Thanks for the info. aussiejohn and I spent a fair bit of time on the door and eventually got the door open. The inside trim is now off and the door lock is out. The door lock seems to work okay out of the door but not installed in the door.
A little more work to do but we're well on the way now. Thanks again Aussie Vetman

I'm glad you got it opened.

Please let me know how you fix it. I have had to open mine that way several times (that's why I know how to do it).

Default Thanks 76 Ray

G'day,

Funny, that photo is very good, but the rod that locks/unlocks the mechanism is the one on the left. Down is unlocked, up is locked. Trouble is, we could not push that rod, or the tab to which it is connected in that photo, all the way up. We had to get a piece of thick wire, bend it 90 degrees on the end, about a half inch long, and wiggle it into the door and "hook" up the tab.

It took a lot of doing but finally we got it to come up and we could open the door. That tab was very stiff in the door and after we took the panel off, I locked the door closed and couldn't open it again. After a couple of VBs, we got into it and finally opened the door with the piece of wire and this time, I took the lock out.

It worked fine out of the door, but we're going to have another Corvette owner friend go over the lock to make sure it's going to work once back in the door. I'll let Aussie Vetman take over from here.

Regards from Down Under.

I guarantee you that pushing down on that tab unlocks the door even when pulling up on that tab doesn't. From what you said in the last post I think the problem is in the adjustment of those rods and levers and not in the lock mechanism itself.

Good luck.
