I have a friend who will sell me a Hurst Indy 4spd universal shifter for next to nothing. Has anyone installed one of these in thier vette. Were any modifications nescesary and did you feel it was an improvement over stock?
Thanks in advance.
I bought one from AutoZone, close out special, $89 new in the box.
It works OK; reverse is a little tricky. It does not have the adjustable stops like other Hursts. I'd recommend spending a couple of extra bucks to get Hurst's top of the line if you drive much.
Jester,
The best shifter for that 69 is a Competition Plus # 391-7992. It has a bend in the shift lever which allow clearence of the console for reverse. Make sure you use the correct linkage also.
I used a Super Street shifter for awhile, but it has a longer reverse arm and made getting into reverse touchey. I works great on a C-2 though.

Why is reverse tricky? Does it hit the console? Other than reverse did you feel it was an improvement over stock. I would like to get the nicer shifter but i dont have the money for it right now and i can get this one for about $20 including the linkage.
Jester,
What type of Car idi the shifter come off of? The Vette has only one linkage that will work with the rods bent at the correct angles. A set of hurst linkage is around a $100. Just because the shifter fit a Muncie trans, doen't mean it will fit your Vette.
