My '68 has been sitting for 14 years and I'm worried about the shifter. In april when there was a garage disaster happened(long story) ans the car had to be pushed out I ran the car through the gears and it clanked and made lots of noise. Now, every time the the shifter is wiggled it will clank softly. Do I have a problem ?
Bushings?
Haven't dealt with the stock shifter in a couple years since I put in the Hurst, but it sounds like some kind of loose, damaged, missing bushing. Have a crawl underneath the car and ask someone else to move the shifter around while you look and listen.
Don't forget to also check the bushings up on the shifter arms of the transmission.
If your disaster was heat/fire related I'd suspect the bushings.

Do you think the car has no fluid in the tranny? The garage disaster was my grandma's '65 Vette's gas tank leaked gas and all the cars had to be pused out and the garage was cleaned. The car also shifts very rough going from 3rd to 4th but when I go from 4th to 3rd it is more smooth.
I had occasional problems with the car not wanting to go into gear, and the shifter used to rattle all the time. When I pulled out the powertrain, I found that the shifter, which is supposed to have 2 bolts holding it to the vertical bracket, had only the long bolt. I replaced the other bolt. Don't know if it's better yet since the engine and tranny are still out.
Don't know what you have, but my Borg-Warner tranny has two plugs on the passenger side. I believe that the oil level should be just below the higher of the two plugs. If they'v never been off, you'll have a really fun time trying to break them loose, though... I had to use a small propane torch and an 8 point socket.
