Default 81 steering column help

Guru's,
I tore down the Steering inside the vette to replace the turn signal swicth what was broken.

Well..Guess who has been there already .... buba

Aside from the obvious improper reassembly that was performed, I found a saftey issue.

I attached my steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel hub, and before i could put pressure on it...i was able to pull the whole assemble out...the Tele rod pulled out with the hub still attached. When this happened the internal thin rod (about 3.7 inches long) fell on the floor with a small metal, sort of L shaped piece.

I can see how the metal rod goes inside the tele shaft as well as that L shaped peice, but I want to know how to reasseble it correctly...
it is supposed to just pull right out after the "C" clip is removed? My case bubba had the C clip just sitting there..maybe why it pulled out with the Hub atached??

per my AIM I know I am missing the retainer clip seen here as well, got that on order...

Hope you guys can help, pictures if possible.

The c-clip and the plastic c-clip retainer are critical safety parts. If the c-clip is removed you will be able pull the entire steering wheel, hub and upper steering shaft right out of the steering column (just as you described.) Also without the metal wedge (the L shaped piece) installed in the slot in the upper steering shaft, the upper steering shaft can pull right out of the steering column since the top edge of the wedge is supposed to contact the c-clip and prevent the upper shaft from pulling out.

Here is a cutaway drawing of the T&T steering column head.

Here is a pic of the upper steering shaft being installed into the yoke shaft.

Here is the plastic c-clip retainer. After 30 to 40 years, the plastic becomes very brittle and usually the retainer breaks into serveral pieces regardless as to how carefully you try to remove it.

Jim
