I recently replaced the engine in my 80 with a 383. While the engine was out I installed a new clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing. Put it all back together. That all took place last fall. Well the weather is getting warm I am going to fire up the new engine. I pressed down on the clutch and it dosen't feel right. The pedal feels real loose like there isn't much resistance. It dosen't feel like it is pushing anything in. I tried the adjustment, but it really didn't change anything, just gave it less play. Before I put in the new clutch everything felt normal. I didn't change any of the linkage. And everything worked fine before I did the work. I reassembled everything like it came out. Any ideas.
Have someone work the clutch and check the linkage. The ball ends on the Z bar might be lose or the fork popped off the ball stud. Other than that, I've got nothing....

Z bar is fine. Everything is tight. Clutch fork is moving. The only thing I found was the rod that goes to the clutch fork, the spacers were missing and there was play in there. I put some washers to make up the space. It just feels like there isn't much resistance. I can push it with my hand and it goes in easy. The clutch and kit were bought from Jegs and are made by Zoom. The pedal just seems to press to easy.
Maybe the other pressure plate was a stiffer one than this one.

I bought it about a year and a half ago. I have to find the part number.
540, Did you buy a Center Force Clutch? If you did, you may not have measured the pivot ball height and might have enough throw (Movement) I had to pull my engine back out and follow the instructions that CF sent with the clutch. Works great now.

I bought the kit from summit and it is a zoom clutch and pressure plate. Stock replacement. Part number is MU1675-1.
Does the clutch work OK? You need to know if there is a problem with the clutch setup, or if its just a wimpy clutch before anyone can suggest a solution.

I don't know if the clutch works. Right now the motor isn't running. And I don't know about it being a wimpy clutch, I have been on other sites and they say this is normal. I also called the company who dosen't think there is anything wrong with it.
And I brought this question here to see if anyone else has the same situation when they replaced their clutch setup.
I have been involved in a number of clutch installations over the years. I have seen clutches that were very stiff, and others that felt very soft. It mostly has to do with the strength of the springs in the pressure plate. You need to try the clutch and see if it works. If it works, then you need to decide if its strong enough to do the job. If it is, then you need to decide if you can live with the light pedal. If it fails any of these tests, you are in the market for a new clutch, in which case, you will want to do a little research to find a clutch that will do the job and has the feel you want.

I have to agree with you. I will be getting the engine running in 2 weeks and go from there.
