When it comes to air filter surface area, more is always better. If you can fit a 3" element under the hood, it's worth doing. Plus, you don't want the air cleaner lid too close to the top of the fuel bowl vents. Put a few blobs of Play-do or some crumpled up aluminum foil on top of the air cleaner and close the hood. It's an easy way to see how much room you have to work with.
Here's a way to calculate how much filter is needed:
According to this formula, and if I have not made a mistake, your combo should be using a 3 1/4" tall 14" diameter element. They make 3 1/2" tall filters, so if you can squeeze one of those under the hood, you should be good. What intake manifold are you running?
Ok, I measured and it seemed like it would clear.
I put the 3" filter on and CAREFULLY closed the hood!
With the 3" filter I have maybe 3/8" clearance now.

Do you think that's ok?
Should be fine. Keep an eye on the bottom of the hood for rub marks, if you see any, you may have a motor mount that is letting the engine move more than it should.

Use a bolt instead of the stud and wing nut to fasten the lid down.
Jeff, the 2" filter with a drop base only has about 1/2" between the top of the A/F and the base... put the A/F together in your hand.. look through the carburetor side, look at how much area you really have... not much... and then you run into all the hot air under the hood which is just as bad... you know i know what in talking about here...
the stock setup with the snorkels is best, but if you have a high rise manifold it will no longer work due to hood restrictions.

Well now, with the 3" thick air filter, it seems "ok"
I'm going to really watch it for witness marks on the hood......
Make 4 little ***** of aluminum foil about 1" diameter. Tape one to each side and one fore and aft on the edge of the air cleaner lid. Close the hood. Open the hood and see how much each of the ***** is compressed to find your hood clearance. I have about 1/2" on the right side.
Buy a K&N filter top for your air cleaner. See pic in my garage. I use a K&N 4" element, drop base air cleaner bottom by Universal Spinners, and K&N breather top. Don't waste your time with any other type of air filter brand. K&N are the best and flow the most. They can be cleaned and re-used. I have one on my C5 that has been on since 2002 and has 65K miles. I clean and re-lube it once a year.

but why clean it? They work better 'dirty'. I have one in my '03 Sport Trac with 85K miles and have never cleaned it! Truck runs like a top! Original spark plugs and exhaust, also. A testament to Ford engineering.................

How much dust is there in NS? Try living in the Nevada desert. I can promise you that your filter will soon be plugged.
Your truck, your rules. Glad you don't own anything worth maintaining!
