Default Parking Break - 1974 Vette

I would like to have some ideas on how to trouble shoot a parking break issue. I am looking for steps I need to take on fixing this issue.

Specifically, I engage the parking break when the car is in park. When I go to disengage the parking break, by pushing in the button on the handle and lowering the handle to the full downward position, the parking break is not fully disengaging. I know this because (1) the parking break light is still on, and (2) I do not have full breaking power in the breaks.

Again, any help in resolving this issue, and any steps to fix it would be greatly appreciate.

I'm actually going through the same thing as well. So far youtube videos have been the biggest help in taking apart and inspecting your parking brake hardware for rust or springs that have disintegrated.

I would check that.

Also, your emergency brake light is a switch that is pressed when your brake handle is fully depressed. That can go faulty. Mine is.

The foot brake (not break) is a completely separate system from the parking brake. One does not affect the other in any way.

The fact that your foot brake is weak and the red light stays on despite lowering the handle indicates a fault not with parking brake but with the foot brake.

The light has two functions- you're chasing the wrong one.

Try bleeding the brakes.

I have an ‘07 Z06 that’s doing the exact same thing, but intermittently...More annoying than anything
I can get the switch to work if I pull the handle up part way a couple of times, then the dash brake light comes on & seat works normally....It’s gotta be the microswitch that’s part of the asking brake mechanism that’s going bad...

This thread is 5 years old and has nothing to do with the issue on your '07
