I like the High Torque starters. I use them anytime I replace a starter. I will never go back to the big GM starters. Even Chevy makes them now. http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm

Thanks for the input on the starters that you use. Seems to be a bunch of good ones available. I had a SummitRacing mini starter that quit on me. I went ahead and ordered the MSD starter I mentioned. I have a lot of red underneath, so I figured I'd stick with the theme
Why waste your money on a pretty red starter? For $100 less you can get one that's just as good but isn't pretty red. I've even had good luck with Summit's cheap one that they sell for $115. The part # is SUM829000.

The Summit starter is the one that went bad on me. This one comes with a shim kit for positioning the starter pinion gear engagement, and setting the pinion and flywheel gear mesh (I use a Fidanza aluminum 168 tooth flywheel). It has a 3.4 hp motor compared to the SummitRacing mini starter I had that went bad which I think had a 1.6 hp motor. Not sure if MSD makes it or someone makes it for them. This is what their website says about them.
"Our DynaForce Starters/Alternators are hand assembled in the USA and never rebuilt or refurbished units.
Our new DynaForce Starter is designed to crank over the highest compression engines on a hot day in Death Valley. Not that too many race cars are sitting in Death Valley, but it’s good to know that you have the oomph to make it happen. The DynaForce Starter features all new components beginning with a three horsepower motor. This power is used to crank over the reduced 4.4:1 gear set to deliver great torque to the engine’s ring gear to get the engine turning. The armature is balanced during assembly and is guided by two ball bearings for smooth engagement and thousands of starts. The downsized housing clears most headers and oil pans, but just in case, we made the billet mount so it can be clocked in different positions to help in tight applications. The assembly is powder coated MSD red and will stay looking good, even though it’s underneath your car."

The only one I had trouble with was an MSD unit, so I guess everything is prone to failure. I use on my test stand now as I don't care that it sometimes won't engage the flywheel. And no, it's not a shimming issue. All of them come with shims and most times I've found them unnecessary.
I doubt that MSD makes these. They are most likely Chinese like everyone else sells. Either made in China or assembled here from Chinese parts.
I've had good luck with the ones made(?) by Powermaster as well.

Good luck with your starter.
I appreciate the input. The main reason I went with this one is because of the higher hp motor compared to the other ones I saw. Yeah, I hope this one lasts a while, suppose to arrive tomorrow and hope to get my vette out for a ride this weekend, so I can check out the Hooker sidepipes I installed last weekend. Thanks

I have been using the MSD starter for several years, and have had no problems with it. Now the cheaper brands of mini starters, not very good luck with them.

Yeah, the SummitRacing one I'm replacing cost a little over $100, only has a few thousand miles on it and is shot.
Glad to hear that about the MSD starter, I hope I have good luck with the one I'm installing also.
