For those of you who didn't hear about me blowing my 350 small block, I did it going 140 and I threw a couple of rods and spun a couple of rod bearings!
Ok, since I have to swap engines I misewell get a big block! Ive been looking at some recon crate engines. I found a big block 496 stroker. It produces over 500 hp! OH YEAH! It cost $5,295.95 Is that a good price or not? And do any of yall know were a good crate engine web site is?
If I do go with the big block, how hard is it to convert my small block vette into a big block? Thanks
:cry to hear about your engine blow up. :) that you weren't hurt.
As for a person who lives zillion miles from you the price sounds rather cheap, where did you find the engine from? It sure sounds like a good deal.
As far as the swap from mice to rat goes, yes it CAN be quite easy thing to do, BUT if you like me you end up changing more than the parts that are vital to complete the swap. I ended up doing complete Body-off job
They also make a 540/600HP you know :jester:. Check out http://www.1800runsnew.com. They do lots of boat engines and the people who have them on the offshore board are all pretty pleased with them.
Sure you know this but here goes, GM 454 HO (425 hp, 500tq) $4,200.00, Also they sell the 502 (iron heads, 450 hp, 550tq) seen them under $5,000.00
One other thing to keep in mine is Chevy High Performance or Hot Rod is going to start a write up on tweaking the GM 454 HO motor. So you'd know exactly what to do to it to make a bunch of ponies.

I found the engine in the summit magazine. Im like you I would end up doing an off body job. Thats why im probably going to pay someone to do it for me, like a performance shop. Just so I have a warranty on it.
And, yes I know they have 540hp and 600hp but they are a little out of my $range! And besides im planning on blowing it! And i want to keep it street legal!
If you hit the "engine specials" link you'll see a nice 460 hp '54 for a good price and a stroker with all the right parts for a little bit more than you quote. IMHO the 454 would me MORE than enough of an improvement over the small block it'd be fine.
