Doing my break in after a rebuild. Engine ran good for about a minute then I hear this nasty rattling sound, same vibration felt in clutch. I only rebuilt the top end. Engine seems to run fine still. I shut here down to minimze any damage. Seems to happen with clutch in or out. Neutral or not. Does seem to engage gears when clutch is released. What to do????
I would pull the valve covers and see if any of the rocker arm nuts backed off or you bent/deflected a push rod. Hate to hear things like that after spending so much time and energy. Hang in there it may be very minor.
What kind of work did you do? Did you do any work on the clutch? Did you have the vibration before? Does it change with engine speed? I need more information on the situation.
I would at least pull the valve covers and see how the rockers look.
I did new heads, cam, headers, intake. And the associated minor things. No clutch work. No problems of this sort before. I dont know if it changes with engine speed. I shut it down quick. Should I try to find out?
Remember the clutch is attached to the engine block indirectly through the z-bar. It can transfer vibrations. Check your dist too to see if it down tight.
There is no obvious damage to either side rockers or push rods. However I am a novice, if a push rod were to bend would it be at the side you can see, or do I have to pull them all and check the whole thing?
I know how you must feel right now dollagreen, but hang in there a bit more, It could still be something simple..If everything appears tight in the rocker box assemblies, visually go completely back over every thing you removed or had a wrench on in the engine compartment..overflow tank, shroud, ect..If everything is tightened down, find a way to manually turn the engine over while looking into the rocker boxes you may be able to see a bent pushrod or other problem this way without further damage..Keep us posted..
Are all the plug wires on securely? Perhaps it's mis-firing on a cylinder. I can't think of a specific clutch related reason for the pedal to vibrate unless the disk chucked some material. That is unlikely if you weren't driving it.
Im going to have to go ahead and change my clutch guess. It is not clutch related. I fired her up again. The rattle stoped after a few seconds running at about 2k, then resurfaced when I let the rpms drop down to 1k. DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE? I have some other serious work to do, even after I figure this out. I have some major oil leaks. The water pump seem to have a hairline crack I didn not see, leaking like a banche. WHY did i decide to do this. Oh yeah I did learn a lot.
OK , how bout this, If your motor is out of time, or misfiring, for whatever reason, yes it could make a racket at low rpms(idle) because the flywheel and motor is rocking around and crashing components , bell housing, exhaust ect..against the frame or ??
Mine has done this when radically out of tune and wanting to stall at idle!
Did you get your distributer back on the right cam gear tooth?
Sounds like you got alot of other fun stuff to do too :smash:
Try and have fun, eventually youll get it all smooth sailing

I was very very carefull about getting the cam in the right way, and the dist in the right way, labled all the wires etc. I was really afraid to screw something like that up. I have to quit this for a couple of hours and get my wits about me. Im overwhelmed now.
A mechanic I know in town seems to think the rattle is due to the valves being out of adjustment. I didnt think of this but when I used the Lars method of adjusting them I dont think there was any accounting for the fact the that they were new and did not contain any OIL. Nor did the engine. What a stupid mistake...so can someone tell me now that the motor has been run for about 10 minutes how I should go about getting them right. The good news is that the mechanic does not think I have damaged anything???? Comments?
UPDATE, for those who care...I took the advice of a mechanic and went ahead and let the engine run with the terrible rattle. The mechanic claimed that it would take a while for the lifters to pump up. I chanced it, and after a couple more minutes the rattle subsided. So I am hoping that he is correct and nothing else is wrong and will resurface. I am going to run it a few more times and then reafjust the valves. Has anyone else ever experienced this?
Now i just have the nasty leaks to deal with at least I hope. :smash:
