On mine you can get away dropping the steering column as far as it will let you. Then loosen the screws to the dash top and the side bezel. Also at the door jamb area. Then you can move the front dash enough to pull switch out. Just be carefull with hoses etc...
X2 for probably a new switch, If you are really not wanting to do the repair right now I would at least try having someone try to push the small release button on the switch and re inserting the switch ****-shaft. If this works it may buy you 6 months if you are careful when using.
Maybe something is pressing on the release button behind the dash. If so, then maybe jostling the switch around a bit might take the pressure of the button.
I would loosen the retaining nut, and see if you can use an awl or screwdriver or something to reposition the switch slightly, then tighten the retaining nut, and try the rod again. I would make sure not to completely remove the retaining nut, and to make sure to tighten it back up before you try to engage the rod - just in case it does work.
A few months ago I had to replace my switch the instruction say to pull gently for the first few times and I did. The **** kept pulling out and I mean pulling out of the switch all the way. I sent it back and got a replacement and that **** has pulled out a few times as well.

Does anyone sell a switch that's NOT a P.O.S. ?!!!
Just started jamming it in and out - figured I had nothing to lose? !
Then it just clicked in.......hope it stays
My switch did that also. It just clicked back in. It's been a couple of years now. I tend to be very gentle when pulling on the lights now..but everything seems to work well.
Best of luck

Almost since the day it was new, the headlight ****/rod on my 81, has pulled out of the switch. I can push it back in, and feel it "click", but the next time I pull on it a little to hard, out it comes.
I had it back to the dealer twice about this, when it was new and still under warranty. The first time they "claimed" they replaced the switch, while the second time they said that there was nothing wrong with it and that they couldn't duplicate the problem.
33 years (and 2 Delco switches) later, it will still pull of the switch, if I'm not careful.
