I been doing it for years I cut the center out and box it in. Then make a center removable/ bolt in. Hear are some pix of a 63 split window I put a 5-speed in.

Here's my wedge-shaped one. The removable part will sit in place on its own without bolts. I was removing the Richmond 5 speed and putting a TKO600 in its place when I did this. Didn't know to separate the 2 parts of the Richmond 5 speed at the time, but its possible that it wouldn't have worked on my car either, per 69427's experience.

I've had the engine in and out twice since making the crossmember removable and its a breeze to remove and install the tranny.

These photos also show how much life is easier for access to the underside of the car with side exhaust.

Lot's of modified crossmembers here, just search. I've seen it done several ways. I'll be cutting mine when I need to remove my ROD 6 speed.

For reasons I can't easily quantify, I just couldn't take a saw or torch to my frame. I just ended up buying a used (automatic) frame and initially just set out to swap out the suspension and body from the original frame. But part way through the process I noticed that I was continuously stepping (and tripping occasionally) over a bunch of spare suspension parts for my C4. One thing lead to another and I just ended up putting the C4 stuff on the "new" frame and leaving the original frame as a complete roller.

I hear you cutting the center out of the tranny cross member is not for nancy boys lol. I would never do it on a all numbers original car. The 63 I posted pix of no longer had the numbers drive line or front end so it does not matter. Also I been a welder and fabricator for 20 years so I could put it back so you could never tell it was modded if need be. Its just metal I just dont believe in taking a tranny apart or pulling engine just to install/remove a tranny. I think cross members need to be removable. Its real wacko the auto cars bolt in but 4-speeds where welded to the frame;( I have also air chiseled around the weld and removed the whole cross member be four. Much easier to just mod the center though.

[QUOTE=qwank;1586593018]That transmission is designed to work with a 3.08 rear gear ratio. /QUOTE]

wouldn`t that depend on which ratios his trans has?

Yes, but the most common ones are set up for 3.08 in mind. I guess he'll have to see what part number trans he has for us to be sure.

the way he described it it sounds like he might have a really steep first gear.
