Marking rear gears
I picked up a rebuilt rear end from another forum member. It looks to be in great shape but I wanted to check the runout and pattern before installing it. I put marking paste on the ring gear but can't seem to get a visible pattern on the gear. Either the pinion gear is missing ( unlikely ) or I'm doing it wrong.
It occurs to me that I should have something against the ring gear to put some pressure on it to allow the pinion ger to produce an imprint.
Ideas? Obviously, I've never done this before.

I put a heavy leather glove on and keep pressure on the ring gear with my hand in the glove. Just put a drag on it as you turn the pinion. I actually use a battery powered drill to turn the pinion so you get it to rotate a number of times while keeping pressure on the ring gear.
