Getting ready to pull engine and ive been researching the gussetting on the frame for racing While under the car i found a crack on the front cross member and after the initial panic it seems this is common? At least i hope its nothing major after the reading ive done and as long as its fixed. I do have the spreader bar, and i dont know if this was there before po installed the bar. I have owned the car for 7ish? years.
My question is can I weld this and the new bracing with a mig? Or is this something i need a professional to do? I can stick two pieces of metal together, but frame can be serious business.
I live in Midland texas, with the oil boom i cant look any direction and not find a certified pipeline welder. Would they be an acceptable alternative?
I'd TIG it keep some of the heat down. I think a better weld in a lot of cases. If you try it, groove the crack some so the weld doesn't just sit on top of the crack. My opinion.
I think finding a tig welder is going to be a chore, but i will look. Is this a job for someone like me that can stick two pieces together? Can i safely add the gussetts and fix the crack?
there is a great thread on here about welding and strengthening the frame with gussets .if you don't have a welder ,look at Blain's farm & fleet for a good price on welders,no sales tax ! .I got a horbart 210 mvp from them . or consider a longevity welder .
Thanks for the help everyone. Talked to my engine builer about his car and cracked frame and talked to a pipeline welder here at work and hes going to fix me up.
