wiper door opens on its own, if I reach under the dash and fiddle [ that's a technical term] with the solenoid it will close then reopen. what is the purpose of the solenoid? the override works properly. thanks T
The solinoid under the dash is the initial signal telling the door to open. If it comes up on start up, shut down or heavy acceleration its likely the check valve. If it stays up all of the time, there is no signal vacuum to the system.
I agree w/ above statements. The vacuum from you manifold actually holds down the door. So, if it comes up after starting and stays open, you have a leak somewhere. Check the check valve first.
The solenoid switches control vacuum to the wiper relay after passing through the override and the wiper safety switch. It is activated by the wiper switch. The default (non-energized) position of the solenoid is to allow vacuum to pass through it to keep the wiper door closed. When the wiper switch is activated, the solenoid cuts off control vacuum to the same parts to allow the wiper door to open.
the override works properly.
If the override works properly, the solenoid has to be functioning ok.

There is a bleed port on the solenoid you may be fiddling with. Possibly blocking it off will allow control vacuum to remain in the system to close the door.
Your problem lies either in the wiper relay, the wiper safety valve, or both. If they are still original equipment I guarantee it.

never gave it a thought about the safety valve. that the one located under the wiper grill? I'll check it. thanks T
