Default Mini Starter for a 1973 454

Hello everyone.

I need some help here. I need to order a mini starter for my 468 big block. The engine has a 168 teeth flywheel. I am confused because I can see two types of starters : in line bolt pattern and staggered bolt pattern. Which one should I buy??
Thank you for your help.

What did you have before? Some blocks are drilled and tapped for both types.

I did the same on a BB. Went with the "standard" Delco pattern vs the universal to minimize my confusion and ease of fitting. Fit like a glove or like the original GM . With an automatic use the 168 tooth and with a manual use the I believe a 153 tooth. But the starters say both will work with it. Before you disassemble and install take a picture of the stock wiring, grounding strap, shielding to show color and location on the terminals. Makes it immensely easier to hook back up again for those that do not do this all the time. Lastly, read the instructions on checking the clearance between the flexplate or flywheel teeth and the starter and shim if needed. Too tight and it makes noise and will crap out quickly, too loose and it might nick teeth. You will be surprised at the weight difference in the stock vs the new mini starters.

I have the power master gear reduction starter from summit racing. The nippon denso minis are also a good choice

BBCs used both the 168 tooth for both the autos and manual

The best get for a smaller starter is the OE permanent magnet starter for the 454 engine {late model BB starter}....sold all over at intelligent auto parts stores
