Default Missing Front Spoiler

Hi Guy's, I just noticed I am missing the front spoiler on my car.It is the rubber or plastic one that is under the front of the car. The car runs under 200 degrees around town and runs 200 degrees when on the highway.I was wondering if anyone knows if this spoiler is to help in cooling or to help the handeling or both. What I am getting at is should I replace it . It was on the car at one time but that is a different story  Thanks >STW< Frank :flag

Frank,
I thought it was there to help with air flow. Sounds like you're doing ok without it.

Hi Frank,
Some claim it works others say it doesn't. I put a new one on last year and of course it didn't fit. I had to open up a couple of the holes but finally got it installed. Did you check the gauge against a known good thermometer in the rad? Be sure the seals are around the rad and support too. I also used a "Flo-Kooler" water pump impeller to add more flow but found the problem was the carb was too lean the plugs were white. I had Lars rejet(Q-Jet) it last year and it works great now. Stays right on 180* unless it very hot and humid and I'm running 3000+ rpm for a 15+ minute run. It then hits just under the 210* spot.

I use to think it was critical but I bought a new one and haven't put it on yet and with a 180 T-stat, I run @ 180 with a/c running. I only sneak up on the 190 range when temps are 100+ ambient. A good radiator and good fan clutch are far more important.

It was pretty important for me. I had pulled my old one because it was trashed and looking ratty. I noticed that my at idle temperatures had stayed the same but my highway speed temperatures had gone up a lot. I put the spoiler back on and voila the temperatures returned back to normal.

Also, something I believe more than my own experience, I have seen here in the forum, that it is important for heat issues.

Yes, the 74-77 models were notorious for not being able to move enough air thru the engine compartment. This attributed for the poor air condiitioning in these cars. Some experienced cooling problems also. The spoilers were designed to make high pressure to the front of the radiator area and also cause low air pressure to the area right behind the spoiler and under the engine right behind the radiator. This caused air to divert thru the radiator and a/c and exit the engine compartment under the engine. A temperature drop of between 10-15 degrees is not uncommon due to a good working spoiler. The aftermarket extended spoilers such as the "pace car" style also made a huge difference in cooling for both engine temperatures and air conditioning performance. My 77 showed great improvement from the "pace car" style spoiler in slow traffic conditions (under 40 mph).
