Default Distributor rebuild

Hey guys. I have a 1972 corvette. Factory distributor with the hole in the housing for the nylon button. My cross gear and shaft were chewed up so i replaced with new shaft. Cross gear and coupling. Also replaced the nylon button. Put it in and it chewed up in 10 seconds. So its back out. Main shaft is fine but cross gear is stripped. My question is this. My lower bushing is a little loose so im gunna fully rebuild the distributor. I see where they sale the set screw that goes in the housing. When putting this set screw in to fix the end play. Do i still need either the nulon butoon or to put the bronze button in. I just want the tach to work and not strip out again in 10 seconds. Thanks for the replys

Check with the manufacturer of your rebuild kit, but it is my understanding the set screw replaces the button.

I bought some replacement nylon buttons from Keen and noticed the head has a smaller diameter and is also thicker, the head diameter didn`t make a difference but the thickness sure did, is yours exactly like the original or like I describe?

Read the posts from Lars, the set screw "fix" is not recommended. Do yourself a favor and send it to him for a rebuild. Or do it yourself, many times, and then send to Lars ...
