Default How To Remove Air Conditioning?

I wanna pull that thing out. It is totally worthless right now. It shoots hot air out because there is no freeon left in it. How do i pull it out. Is it just the compress, belt and the pressure hose that has to come off? And how hard is it to remove?

Even if you pull everything out, hot air will come out. The thing about C3's with A/C is that there is not place for cool air to come in. Even cars that came without air have this problem. Unplug the compressor and you will see the best that your car will have to offer in that reguard.

Well i was thinking since it doesn't work, it's pointless running a belt to it, costing my horsepower. And i wanted to remove it to clean up the engine bay a little bit

Removing the compressor and hoses can be alittle tricky but there is no reason why you can't. Becareful loosening the hoses incase there is any freon in the system. Ware gloves if you can.

The air adds between $2-3k additional value to your Vette. I'd remove the belt but leave it as is, unless you are very good at storing all componets for the next owner to restore your Vette.

You can dispose of the various components for free! just mail-em to me!

Seriously, disconnect the belt untill you want to recharge/repair. Unless you live somewhere that is not very hot. Then see my first comment.

The previous owner of my car removed the compressor and left the lines in place. They appear to have a plate that attaches to the compressor possibly at the back of it. Not sure if this helps but good luck.

If you're concerned about what the next owner will think of your vette then like others have said, keep it intact.

I didn't care. I tossed mine. Mine was not working anymore either, so I removed lined and pulled the pump and the condensor in front of radiator. It could only help handling to get rid of the pump (if its safe) as its a lot of weight up high in the engine compartment.

But that was just me. I can perfectly understand others wanting to keep it to retain value of their car to future owners. To each his/her own.

Eventually I plan on removing the bits within the fender/firewall as its still a bit crowded there for my tastes. But in the meantime, I got rid of most of the obstructions.

As far as heat, have you looked at your heater core bypass valve. It could be toast. I also disconnected my heater core completely since my car is never used for practical driving, just fun. That cut down on quite a bit of heat in the cabin.
good luck!

Identical situation here. I took off all that trash and donated it to the local landfill. Screw it. I don't care what the next owner thinks because there isn't going to be a next owner until the estate sale. I would like to get all that crap off of/out of the firewall and make a nice block-off plate for the hole. (Just another project on The List.)

Like you, the A/C system on my 80 was DOA. However, I decided to update. You might contact Chris Petris at the Corvette Clinic for more info about A/C kits they sell. Their system replaces the old components with modern. No relationship with them, but I did attend one of the Bloomington Gold classes this year that he taught. Phone is: 407-323-7804 or 407-323-0128. Email is: chris@corvetteclinicinc.com

Well I'm going to try and take the belt off first and see what happens. Then maybe disconnect the whole thing. I don't need it anyways... thats what t-tops are for  Where is the heater core bypass valve you mentioned?

I have an old forum thread archived here: http://www.corvettefaq.com/redir.asp?site=473

But personally all I did was buy two brass plugs from Kragen's that fit the holes in the manifold and the water pump, since I don't plan on ever using the heater again.

It took about 10 minutes to pull the compressor on my 72. Disconnect the hoses and unbolt that sucker.

Is the condenser what looks like a mini radiator in front of the real radiator? If so, that goes next.

Alright. I took the compressor off, now i'm trying to figure out how to get the hoese off.. There is one that goes down past the coolant resivior and one that goes to the condensor. How do i get at the one that goes past the coolant then down.. There is no way i can fit my hand in there or get it from under the car? When i take these hoses off do i just cap the ends from where they come off? Do i have to plug anything else? I read somewhere you have to plug 2 holes in the manifold?
