My old starter stop working. Made hard clicking noise at the starter. Replaced with a new one from NAPA dealer. It would work but after having to make it click 3 or 4 times to start. Replaced it. New starter doing the same thing. No grinding noise just have to turn the ignition switch several times to get the starter to turn. Check and getting full voltage at the starter.
Suggestions????
Could be IGN switch on the steering column going bad. The elec switch on top of column about half way down. When they get old and worn out it does not always want to send full power to starter and other things that get power when you turn the key on. Fun to replace
check contacts on the battery cables, also where the negative cable grounds to the frame. Make sure they are clean.
Also the block and starter need a good clean contact. Paint, rust or even oil will make for a bad contact. You also have to check the starter gear for signs of damage. It may be jamming on the flywheel if they are to close. That's when you'll see guys use shims. Rarely happens but if all else fails, you may have to go there....
