Default Cleaning the Mufflers

A few months ago, I had a leaking gas tank in my 70. Got the tank replaced, and all is well. HOWEVER, I now have essentially "baked-on" gas goo clinging to my mufflers. The mufflers are not stock, and are aluminized steel.

Anybody know of what will get this stuff off? I've tried engine de-greaser, wd-40, and metal polish. The metal polish kinda worked, but still I have stuff baked on. Suggestions anyone? :chevy

I think it's time to get the old wire wheel out.

How about fine grit sandpaper... maybe 600 grit. Anything higher would probably take for ever to get the stuff off, but you can start with 1000 grit if you're nervous about using 600. I'd imagine it would work. If you're really concerned with the appearance, you might want to wet-sand them.

Use some laquer thinner on Boo-Boo's mufflers! Wall-Mart sells thinner. Use it in a well ventilated area. It will remove any black out paint but you can easly re-apply it! Take care Evan, and how's the new wife? Thad---Just a shell of a Man!! HaHa

I agree with the others, you need to get more agressive. Keep in mind that you'll probably lose the aluminum coating in the process (if you haven't already) and they won't be pretty for long before rust sets in. Maybe you wanted a new set of mufflers anyway? :)
