Default Ac oil displacement ?

HELLO FORUM,
I have a ? for the HVAC FOLKS ON HERE.
I've flushed and restored my factory AC on my 68.
I'm using orig. components except the compressor.
I will be recharging with R-12.
Orig. amt was 3.4 lbs, and 11 oz of oil.
The oil total was using a Harrison A-6 compressor.
I will be using a Pro6Ten replacement. It is a Sanden based 5 series.
My ? is about where to add the ester oil?
Some tech bulletins say add 1/2 total amt of oil to compressor and 1/2 to the receiver/dryer.
Older publications state to add predetermined amt to each component that was removed for cleaning.
Which is correct? or our both methods acceptable for disseminating oil through the system?
Also would 11oz still be required?
Thank you in advance.
Marshal

Marshall... I am by no means an AC expert but I have some experience.

I would say first, if you are replacing the compressor with someone else then you need to contact the manufacturer of that compressor for what amount of oil they require when used on your system. The oil is used to lubricate and cool the compressor. You need to have the amount they require as it is carried around the entire system via the gas and liquid state of the freon. The bulletins you are pointing out are telling you that the oil settles throughout the system and you don't really know how much is in any place at anytime. So if you replace the compressor they recommend a certain amount of oil since you don't really know what is scattered throughout the system. They want you to measure what came out of the component you replaced and then add that back in. Its a guideline for if you are replacing items. In your case if you flushed it that may have removed all of the existing oil which would give you a known amount to put back in. Be mind full of the dryer they can be tricky to get the oil out of and are usually contaminated after so many years and bubbas AC service.

This is the sanden site and this pdf has some great info about oil around page 22 but again I dont know what compressor you have other than it being a 5 series which inidcates 5 piston and this is referencing 134a not R12 http://www.sanden.com/objects/Sanden...e%20Manual.pdf

You say you flushed the system, did you replace the dryer? You don't want to flush with the dryer in place. You cant reliably get the flush and oil out of a dryer or mufflers in the system and you definitely don't flush a compressor. Also, you should check the orifice tube if you have one as I believe this system uses one and you dont want to flush with that in there. Replace the dryer Pretty simple and after all these years the sillica could be contaminated and would be simple insurance. Also, it would take out the question of is there any oil left in it.

I just installed a vintage air setup in my car and I knew that the system was dry. The sanden compressor that I had with the serpentine system comes filled with the oil it requires so I did not have to add any and the oil was all in the compressor. It was not dispersed throughout the system. Your compressor manufacturer may require you to disperse it but again that is up to their requirements. The point here is that the company that makes the compressor knows what it should need in a typical setup. Your compressor company may want to know how big your condenser is and how long your lines are but I could only see that being an issue in today's SUV's where there are really extensive lines and additional evaporators in the system requiring more oil.

Good luck.
