Default Newb question

I'm putting new valve covers on my 77 and ran into a small problem. The new valve covers won't allow for this piece to clear. Trying to figure out what it is and if I need it or if I can just get a plate to block it off. Also I notice it has a spacer could I just get a bigger spacer.

The piece I'm talking about is center picture brass colored right next to the carb.

That is the EGR valve...they do make a block off plate for it.

Mr. Gasket part number 7631

It is part of the emissions system, so if you have to undergo a sniff test, you probably should not remove it...

No worries about a sniff test. Washington doesn't require it for a vehicle this old.
Thanks for the response

I think you have to plug the whole with a pipe plug or threaded pipe plug if you don't have the block off plates installed between the intake and heads! If not the exhaust gases will have a steady stream flowing into the intake.

Most valve covers can be wiggled past the EGR. I would try that first.

Since you don't have to worry about emissions testing, you will notice an improvement in throttle response with the EGR removed. Not a big power improvement but it feels better.

what would you need to plug...seems like the block off plate covers everything you would need covered?
