Hey guys, Im brand new to this thing. In fact this is my first post evr. I did a bonehead thing recently. My starter died and I had to replace it. Since I was leavng town I thought it would be a good idea to pull the core ad go by the replacement so when i came home in 10 days i could install the new one right away. I may have some wires "crossed" ??? Anyway I ve now replaced he battery, alternator, neg batt cable (which was corroded) and starter. SOMETHING is now draining te batt pretty quick. Like,I charged the batt, started he car drove for 30 minutes and 5-10 minutes after shutting down the battery was dead. Is it possible that the solenoind is staying energized somehow from not being grounded properly??? I know I did wrong by waiting 10 days and NOT labelng the wires- but please be gentle Im new this corvette thing :)
If this started happening only after the new starter was replaced I would think that it has a problem also. I have never had a starter do this but if nothing else has changed I would check the connections and if all was in order I would try another starter.
OK, this is where the electrical knowledge probably exceeds about 99% of the board, but the simple story is...there is a black wire in the harness which is ground for at least the wiper motor and the blower motor....it has a 3/8 diameter lug on it...and if you put it over the battery starter stud...you have back fed a lot of accessories when the key is off....and it's possible you drain the battery that way, depending on what's where and turned on....
now there should be only two wires on the battery stud on the solenoid...
obviously the battery wire...duh....and another fairly thick maybe cloth maybe red plastic about 8 ga wire or so to the main power stud on the drivers' fender liner...part of the horn relay, it's a main power distribution tie point...
only one wire to the starter solenoid small terminal next to the engine block...
the one towards fender gets a wire ONLY on cars with points ignition...
BTW, that black 3/8 terminal goes sometimes to the starter mounting bolt...
or a bellhousing bolt....
better yet, is take the damn thing up top and tie off to an intake manifold bolt so as not repeat the mistake in the future.....
