Default TV cable adjustment problems! Help!

I have a 1980 Corvette that I switched the factory carb to an Eldelbrock. The TV (Throttle Valve) cable is slotted for my cruise control, I believe. I can't remember if I need a clip or if this just slides? I think I Know how to set it but it seems that it will not always spring back to it's setting. It is easy to push the cable back. The back button is locked. Is that ok? I read the cable must be out half an inch not to burn out the tranny. Snug at full throttle. Correct?

Does that mean I should get a new cable? I have searched the web for hours and just can't find a picture of a slotted TV cable hooked up on an Eldelbrock. I know I can get this type of cable. I just am confused. Anyone here a tranny guy that can help me out???

If you have a TV cable, that probably means you have either the 700r4 or 2004r transmission. Go to Bowtie overdrives and read through their procedures for adjustment. The pictures and description will do a better job than I can with words.

I was told that 1980 came only with TH350 trannies! I got a Chilton manual that says the same thing. Confused! It shows the TV cable in 1980 but it does not say a hell of a lot. Very blurred photo. The sliding cable end is a my confusing part. I don't understand how it is supposed to work. I wish it was a 700r4 or 2004r. Thay have videos all over the place!

That's a Detent cable or a kick down cable we use to call it. Yes it is slotted to let the throttle move about a 1/3 before it starts pulling on the cable.

Most old Chevy manuals cover it's adjustment and location. You want to have enough pull on it so it kicks into the passing gear about 1/2 pedal and you must make sure it doesn't bind in anyway. A stuck gas pedal is no fun

So if I drive with it unhooked it is safe. I just need to manually shift. It won't burn out the transmission?
