I picked up a new oil pump today, shown below. It is a GM-discontinued part so I went with a Federal-Mogul unit. I believe that that corporation has a pretty solid reputation.
Q1. The link included below contains installation instructions. They speak of "new" and "old" main bearing caps. And 7/16-14 x 2-3/16" and 7/16-14 x 2" mount bolts, respectively. For some reason I concluded that 1979 is old so I bought the #3754998 (2-3/16) bolt from a GM dealer. Just so all pieces would be fresh. After thinking things through, my conclusion may be an erroneous assumption. So the question is: if during disassembly I find a "new" bearing cap, can the 2" bolt be re-used? Or should I order a new one? The pizza and beer fest is next Saturday so there is adequate time to get one.
Q2. Is the pick-up screen shaft simply a press fit into the pump? I cannot see any other way of fastening it....BTW, the holes in the metal mesh are very fine. Kind of brings home the need for clean, sludge-free oil.
1.)I don't see why you couldn't use the old screw because it is not under a load like a bearing and most people rebuild motors without replacing them.
2.) Yes it is just a press fit but I know most people tac weld it in anyway.
3.) I wish I could join you for the pizza and beer.
Thanks for the reply. I will knock it in with a rubber hammer. And yes, I anticipated that the old bolt could be used again. Does not move and is well lubricated! I guess I am **** on repairs....
Barry and Vetdrms. Very useful information! I don't have the special tool but I am sure one of my friends who is a mechanical genius has something similar. The torch may be a problem but I certainly prefer to have the oil pick-up screen spot welded. There will be three or four of us doing the job so once we have the pick-up properly positioned, one person can drop by a local garage to have the work done. Appreciate your help!

Paul,
Be careful about excessive heat if welding.
You may want to remove the bypass spring before welding. Excessive heat will ruin the spring.
A torch would be a no-no. A quick spot with the "electric" works great.
Good luck.
