So I had bought a set of long tube headers from headmann, and decided this weekend was the time to put them on since I got my welder to work. So the real question is, what kind of performance can I expect from swapping out the old exhaust manifolds? 20 hp? 15 hp?
I know that the 454s of the 70s (mine is a 1973) were pretty much choked to death. Do you think I can feel any noticeable improvement?
From manifolds to headers, you should easily see 15-20 hp with quicker throttle response at higher rpm.
If it's a low compression smog motor, don't expect to much on the low rpm side. Just to give you a heads up

I really have my expectations at zero. Low compression is what killed these motors. and mine is no exception. Hopefully it breathes better considering my old manifolds were leaking where they met the exhaust pipe!
The more air your engine is capable of pumping, the more gains you'll see with headers. Even with a relatively mild BB the results are worth it IMO. I think you'll be pleased.

Headers are huge on a big block,I have seen claims of more than 50 hp on a decent build. The sound is amazing also.
