Default AC Question

I took my 1980 in for a $19.95 AC checkup and was told that the system works when the switch in the consol is bypassed, and was also low on freon. I repaired the switch which wasn't fully seated on the connectors. My question is ....when the AC is engaged I hear the relay at the firewall click, but I see/hear no noise from the compressor. I would have expected to hear and see the clutch kick in also maybe a noticable drop in engine idle. Am I right to assume these things? The AC is the factory original.

Default Re: AC Question (bourne62)

The system has a low pressure cut-off switch so if it is too low on refrigerant the compressor will not turn on. It should be a plug on the smaller line/hose. Try jumping the plug to see if the compressor works. You will need to get it serviced though... you can't run it like that.
