Default Fuel gauge problems............

Hey guys.......... got a problem !

I've installed white faces on the gauges in my 71 and have hooked them back up. Everything seems to be fine except the fuel gauge........... it seems fine until I turn the dash lights on and then it spikes to the right. It will go just past the 3 o'clock position, but returns when I turn the lights back off ! I'm figuring its some sort of ground issue, but don't know where to go from here................. any ideas ???

It's losing signal... That's why it's pegging full...

Mine, would work, then go full, then work, then go full... MY situation turned out to be the sending unit wire at the tank... It was on the post connection , but not clicked on... Remove the gas cap, remove the rubber grommet slightly, found the wire, push it on, viola !

Something causing a signal interrupt when power is applied through the board for the lights... That'll be a little more exciting. Lol. Perhaps the printed board? Grounds? Something is interrupting the signal somewhere ... Good luck!

This does sound like a ground problem. Like the headlamps are chasing a ground through the fuel gauge. Have you replaced the headlamp switch lately? If so did you make sure to install the switch ground strap?

Make sure you have a good cluster ground and that the gauge is put together correctly. (top left picture below).

Been testing ohms this evening and I'm still no closer to figuring this problem out ! When I got the car, the gas tank and internals had been replaced. When I put the ohm meter on it, it shows 2.2 ohms... and it has about half a tank of gas in it ! I'm figuring it should show 45 ohms, but the gauge seems to show the proper fuel level............. only when I turn the gauge lights on does it spike to the right ! I do have red LED's in it, but they don't seem to be as bright, like the blue ones I put in the mako ! and I haven't tried to put regular bulbs in to see what happens.

The fuel gauge worked before, but the old headlight switch was corroded and did not work.............. I pulled all the gauges out and disassembled everything. Cleaned and sanded everything to make sure I would have a good ground when everything was reassembled.... new headlight switch along with the ground strap to it. I'm wondering if I might have a problem with the dash wire harness.......... I'm replacing the ones up front, but I don't have them completely hooked up yet.
