When I start my car it will idle at either 1500 or 1000 in park. If it's at 1500 and I put it in reverse it goes to 800 and that seems like a pretty big drop to me. If it's at 1000 and I put it in reverse the car will die unless I give it some gas while shifting. Once I get it going I have no more problems unless I let it sit for about 3 or 4 hours. What could be the problem?
BEN , I have an 80-L82 That idles fast from a cold start , the old carb./ chokes commonly operate like this. Just let it idle for a minute or two then kick the gas. It should kick the idle down. Remmeber, try not to put in gear at fast idle with your foot on the break. your universal joints HATE that. {I have also sprayed 10w 40 on all the springs an levers around the carb] HOPE THIS WORKS.........
Seems to me that things are normal. Here are the specs for my 1979:
-5.7L (350cid) Federal L-82
-automatic transmission
-Curb idle (Drive) 700rpm
-curb idle (Neutral) 900rpm
-enriched rpm 730-770
-solenoid speed 750rpm
-fast idle in Neutral 1600rpm
The thing is that it takes about 4 minutes to go from fast idle to curb idle, and once it does the car dies when going from neutral to drive unless I give it some gas. I took the carb off and used a whole can of carb cleaner on it and that didn't seem to change anything.
This morning everything worked fine when I started it, it fast idled for about 10 seconds, then went to normal idle and it didn't die when I put it in gear. At lunchtime it was acting up again. Since this morning it was abnormally cool I'm assuming that this is tempature related. Anyone have any ideas?
