stock l48 with performer intake. q-jet,auto .308 gears, manifolds (2" rams horn with about 3 inches of 2" pipe coming out of manifold and then to 2.5 pipe )true 2.5 with flowmasters .Mallory HEI. This car is a DOGG.. Although seems to "Run" and Idle Excellent. looking for more torque. Any ideas out there? Got about 2000-3000 to spend .I do have a performer vortec intake sitting on the shelf with a road demon 625 on it . heads/cam? Car revs REAL slow, sounds like it is running out of steam at 4000 rpm although will shift at 4900 or so.
I went with vortec iron gm heads and a summit 1103 cam, pepped it right up. You already have the right manifold and a good budget so maybe roller cam and aluminum vortec heads.
I would be inclined to go with a good set of heads and a swap to a 3.55 gear. You won't see anything from an intake/carburetor swap if your originals are in good order.
start with long tube headers and full 2.5'' pipes and a set of aftermarket heads. any heads will be better than the stock ones. and change the cam also. should be well within your budget. I would do the intake also more for weight savings than anything else. get the stock carb professionally rebuilt and you will be all set
If it's an automatic, give serious consideration to swapping in a 700-r4 transmission. The 3.06 first gear will give you some more squirt off the line, and the overdrive will let you cruise effortlessly on the highway. A lot of people who have done it say that it was the best mod they ever performed on their 'vette.
I put out an honest 280 rear wheel horsepower and I get 20mpg.
I re-ringed the stock block at 90,000 miles and put in a new Scat crank
Ralph
I also went with this cam... powerband comes in nice and low and its all in by 5500-6k..... I went with dart iron eagle heads and desktop dyno200 estimates 396hp and 414lbs of torque.... this is a rebuilt engine waiting to go into the car (I also put a scat crank in it with flat top pistons, an rpm performer clone intake and 650 edelbrock carb.) not the original L48 which is coming out.
