Default 81 electric fan

I don't think mine is working, does anyone what triggers it how I can test it, I unplugged it and tested the fan itself to make sure it works, and it does just fine off of a 12v source, but I have never seen it kick in and I noticed the other day she was running a little hot, I remember someone saying the ground on the back of the passengers side head is part of it, and that ground is missing on mine, the bolt is there but I cant find any wire that should go to it. thanks

it turns on at around 228 degrees. my engine has never gotten that hot to turn it on. I believe the ground is through one of the bellhousing bolts

mine usually runs about 185 or so, the other day I was using the ac, which I just swapped out compressors and climbing a big hill and I noticed it went up to 200 a little above. I have never seen it get that hot before, which made me think my ac swap might not have been a good idea or just my aux electric wasn't coming on like it should. but I climb the same hill 4 times a week for work, and even with the ac off its still getting up to 200, so my ac wasn't the issue, maybe I just never noticed it on that hill before lol

200-210 is the normal operating temp. I wouldn't worry about it yet.

Yes and the fans don't kick in till it reaches over 225.. mine came on at 228 until I put a lower temp fan temp sensor in....( mine failed twice in 13 years btw) I believe the first poster had it right that GM used a 225-230 temp relay during these years for some reason.

According to the link that speedreed8 posted the fan doesn't kick on until 238 degrees F. That was unacceptable to me. I replaced the sending unit with one that kicks that fan on earlier. You can get them in different temperatures depending on your needs. Summit Racing is where I got mine.

I think I would rather have it kick on at 200 not 238

There's a heavy gauge plug in front of the starter. You can pull it and use a jumper wire in the plug to turn the fan on but everyone is correct, that sucker doesn't turn on until it's just about ready to boil 235*!!!
Some of the venders sell the lower thermostat switch that screws into the side of the block. Then just plug the heavy gauge plug into it. I think their turn on temp is 195*

when I put on the side pipes last year, the plastic clip that holds the wires on the thermostat cracked, didn't think much of it then, but today I took the wires out of the clip and tightened the connections and done away with the clip and plugged them in and now its like a keyed switch comes on every time she runs, didn't realize this until I went for a drive and came back and herd the fan running, never herd it run before, I like this option much better, until I pick up a lower rated thermostat switch.

You don't need it at 200. That's normal operating temperature. You need it at 238 because 240 and higher is moving toward the hot side.

Chris... When I was trying to test that switch I accidentally grounded the two together with the alligator clip of my test light... It too came on with a turn of the key... At least I know it works... But your situation may not 'Stay' on if it's just arcing or touching the two connectors... But, those two wires touching at that temp sending unit is causing what you describe. ;-)

they are not arching, but maybe when I tested them it stuck open, and will shut off when it gets up to temp. I will keep an eye on it until I find a new one.
just insulated the connections, and it must have jumping, darnit
