When I drove back to Miami from Clearwater at 3 AM - I stopped at a gas station to fill up my tank... A old Supra pulled into the station to look at my car... He really liked it and asked a couple of questions. He also said: "I know that you will beat me easy but "Would you like to race me"? I said "sure"!!! He said: "I know that I'm going to lose but I just love racing"...
We pulled up in front of the gas station and ran for a little less than 1/4 mile... When I finished (in front of the I-95 ramp) he was approxl 1/2 way back    . He was very impressed with my cars performance and said "Man - great car"!!! I was beating him very easy even though I was spinning the tires like crazy through all the gears... My Vette was dancing and very hard to keep straight.... I have to find some solution for my traction problem!!!

Keep it on the track!!!! :mad :mad :mad :mad
:jester Good job keeping up the image for us. Supra guy doesn't sound like a bad guy at all, he may even be a good friend to keep. Never known when he'll decided to up the boost significantly and shoot for 1000+ hp, no? :) You may just want to go for a ride.

The guy actually was pretty cool!! Many ricers are car enthusiats like we are!!
I actually don't like to race on the street because of all the risks. However - the street was completely empty and there were only 2 gas stations - no houses or apartments within a couple of miles... With other words - the risks involved were as low as on the track!!

Those would be to low... My front tires have a 27.1 inch diameter... 265/50VR15 have less than 26 inch diameter.. I was thinking in going with 275/60R15 Drag Radials on the rear (28 inch diameter) because of my gearing.. smaller tires = more tire spin!!!
Re: My first "kill" with the new engine!! (GrandSportC3)
GrandSportC3,
Sounds like you are getting your car dialed in, congrats! My old T/A's wouldn't hook up either. The rubber had gotten too hard and dry. The new ones hook up very well. Get sticky tires, not necessarily wide ones. Tire pressure, not tire width, determines how much rubber you have touching the ground. A 1 foot wide tire @ 28 pounds has no larger contact patch than a 6" wide tire @ 28 pounds.

If I go to the strip - what tire pressure would you recommend? 20 PSI??
My setup is still far from being tuned in.. I still only get 325 RWHP with a combo that should make AT LEAST 370 on the rear wheels... Well - I'm sure that when racing, the engine makes a little more power because of more fresh air getting forced through the air filter - leaning out the mixture little bit... right??
Re: My first "kill" with the new engine!! (GrandSportC3)
Olivier,
20psi is probably a good place to start. I've heard of going as low as 12. Depends on tire width and wheel width. I think if you try different tire pressures out on some smooth concrete you will see if they make an even black mark across the tread, or is it heavier on the outside edges (pressure too low). Go as low as you can and still get an even spin mark. Be careful as you get close to 12psi, you might spin the tire on the rim. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to mark the tire in relationship to the rim at the track to make sure you are not doing this. But, you won't hook up on smooth concrete anywhere close to the traction I would expect you would get at the track. The concrete just makes it easier to see the patterns. Whatever you do, make sure you've got something to pump them back up before you drive home. :yesnod:
Your car sounds like it is really turning out great. Wish I could see it!
Re: My first "kill" with the new engine!! (GrandSportC3)
The problem with any 15 inch tire if it has good traction it will not last long. I ran MT sportsman pro"s. These are full wrinkle walls with excellent traction but very limited mileage. I then ran MT ET streets, very good traction but they didn't show the wear as quickly but they swayed alot at highway speeds while passing. The Drag Radials are very expensive and after a few months look wore out. All 3 give excellent traction at a high price. I ended up right now with 305 radials and lousy traction.
That guy was a good sport.

I have 8 inch wide wheels and currently 255/60R15 BFG Radial T/A's..
When I run it the first time - I will try 17 - 18 psi... Will see how it goes!!! If I still get an even mark - I will go as low as 14 or 15.....
12 just sounds too low for me...
The car has lots of power - without being tuned well... This will be a rocket when everything will be dialed in!!!

If I get some Drag Radials - I will only mount them on the strip.
I drive my 68 a lot and I need tires that are good on the street too. Therefore I might just get a used set of Drag Radials and used rims and just mount them at the track! I have thought in getting 295/50R15 street tires but I think that Drag Radials are just going to hook up much better...
