when the clutch is fully depessed, is it under "wear and tear" or only when it is being engaged? i guess i'm trying to apply this question to stop and go traffic. when termporarily stopped, is it better to leave the shifter in neutral or keep it in first with the clutch depressed? thanks
Though i'm not at all sure, I'm going to guess that its not under "wear and tear" if it were lots of signs would be there. You'd idle (like with an automatic) . It would be very hard to shift (esp. into first).
Of course, like I said, I'm just guessing. Someone else who REALLY knows should step in here and lay down the truth for us.

If the clutch is adjusted correctly it is fully dis-engaged when the pedal is depressed..I really think the clutch in while sitting idle in traffic. I have been driving that way for many years and never have any throw-out bearing problems.
I've always been told to put the car in neutral and let the clutch back out if the car is going to be sitting still for more than 30 seconds. I don't know what the expected life of the throwout bearing is under alot of use, but I'll be cussing if I have to pull the tranny again to replace a $15 part!
