I'm looking for the corvette that gave me the 'Fever' when I was 4 years old. It's a 1972 Coupe that belonged to my uncle. Originally, the car was purchased in Florida and last seen in Austin Texas when my uncle sold it in 1980. The car was Pewter Silver with a black deluxe interior and an automatic transmission. It was a 350, but had a big-block/LT-1 hood, even though it was not an LT1. I've tried to locate it here in Texas through DMV records, but they're a little stingy with information these days. The last license number I know of was a Texas Vanity plate "7T2" If anyone knows of the car or where it might be, please let me know. :flag
Re: Searching for the car that started it all... (71,454,4spd)
that's part of the problem. I don't have the VIN. I was talking to a buddy at lunch, though, and I think I may have found a way. I can probably get the VIN from the DMV using the license number. I'll let you know once I track it down.

Okay...I talked to DMV again, and they looked up the license number for me, but said that it's been too long since it was registered with that plate, and they don't show any information on it. Anybody have any ideas where I can find a VIN so I can locate this car?

Hopefully your uncle still has some old registration or purchase paperwork stashed away forgotten in a dusty part of the closet somewhere.
Maybe he still has some old checks from the era on file with which he paid a registration fee. Those may have the VIN written on the "Memo" line for DMV purposes.
Did he have a regular garage or mechanic? That business or individual may be a resource, too.
Does he remember where he bought it? This is a really long shot, but if he bought it from a dealer--especially if he bought it brand new--MAY be able to search its records.
Re: Searching for the car that started it all... (The Dude)
Dude,
thanks for the ideas. I've already tried my uncle, but at that point in time, he wasn't immersed in the corvette culture and didn't keep any paperwork (a trait he makes up for now). As far as work, he and my dad did all the maintenance. Finally, he bought it from the original owner in 1977 or 78, and as far as I know, has had no contact with him since.
The only other lead I have is an old photo of the car with a previous license plate. I'm hoping that the DMV may have some record on that tag since they didn't on the vanity plate.
