Default Pulled the 406 on Sunday.

Hot as could be,I pulled the 406 wearing swim trunks and sipping a stiff rum and coke.Took 4 hours start to finish. Now it's on the stand awaiting tear down (maybe tonight) and reconstruction. I'm going to let the machine shop do the bottom end, since I spun a bearing, and really don't want to pull her again anytime soon. The cam is still up in the air. I wasn't thrilled with the XE-274 from day one, though it pulled like King Kong right off idle. I think I should be able to step it up a size or two, shift the torque 500 rpms up without hurting anything. Has anyone out there actually run a 406 with a healthy cam(lots of lope at idle, strong pull from 2500-6000). I've ruled out a solid grind due to the mileage I run,and ruled out the XE-274,but how far can I go,and still run her daily? Comp Cams doesn't recommend anything stronger than what I already have, but I feel there's room for improvement.

I've got a 276HR in mine. It's a relatively mild roller cam and it pulls pretty good. But, like you, I think I could have gone a step or two stouter.

Glad to see you rebuilding the 406 & reinstalling it :yesnod: . It's a toss up if I should go to a 383 or 406 for my next motor. I will probably be buying a whole new forged rotating assembly at that time, so it's a matter of which block to use  . My goal is 400+ lb/ft of torque from 2500 up with about 550hp at 6000-6500 max for the street.

It's nice to see others that enjoy a rum & coke when facing such tasks ;) .

Wish I could be of some help on your cam choice :chevy .
