Default Options for Sidepipe MUFFLERS?

Hi guys,

Running a 454...was gonna go with the stock 70 454 pipes and mufflers...BUT am looking at trying to improve this...since they are 2.5 inch push bent (so probably 1.75 at the bends)...wanted mandrel or true 2.5 inch pipe...BUT the burning question is the mufflers...

SO upgrade the sidepipe mufflers from stock...anyone do this?
what did you use?

Thanks!

Ron

build your own. anything else on a big block is going to choke it. I did 2.5'' to 3'', on a big block I would go 3'' all the way. cost me under $100 to fab mine up (minus the tips)

No, they are 3" pipes with an auger insert. The biggest stock style muffler you can get is 2.25"

I ordered all the parts from summit except the auger baffles, which I got from Jegs because they are a few bucks cheaper there

I agree with qwank, you have to build them. My car has the Stainlessworks headers along with their sidepipe mufflers which neck down to less than 2" at the muffler inlet. I am going to replace the sidepipes with custom 3" pipes and auger-style inserts.

Thanks!

I oddly hooked up with Lou Belanger of Belanger headers/exhaust. He is big in Viper performance. Will be talking to him about some good flow/good sounding pipes. He advised 2.5 inch to equal mufflers. Will get more info from him and see where this can go.

Thanks!

Hi Guys!,

OK! consulted 2 engine builders (legit guys), they advised 2.5 inch pipe, and stock mufflers. both said any race muffler will be too loud.

also talked it through with Lou Belanger...Belanger headers & exhaust...great guy.
He advised going stock ALSO b/c will be easier on sound and performance will not change...unless do 1/4 mile stuff...then he said it will be like .2...

so went with the stock sweet thunders! Will let you know when done this month.

Thanks for all the info and help!

I think you are going to leave horsepower on the table going with stock mufflers. the gains you will get with the expensive aluminum heads you bought will be lost with the choking 1.8'' pipes.

and you have to look at them hanging down from under the covers too

actually I like the stock covers...saves skin ALL the time!

That is the only difference...I will have a true 2.5 inch pipe from the collector to the muffler. then stock sweet thunders...

I did think that about wasting HP...but both engine builders AND the Belanger said it will not be noticed, unless quarter miling it. they all agreed it will run/pull fine. they said 3" will be loud (which i really dont want b/c it will be loud anyway, and I dont like my ears ringing) and really not necessary...that it will flow just fine with 2.5 ....AND they only issue with be that PUSH BEND- which we will not have....

I like the stock covers too, but the stock mufflers hang down 90% of the time. I think the only person here who's doesn't is Allen's and I still think it's just the angle he took the pictures.

you might not notice the power difference putting the stock mufflers on a fresh new motor that you haven't driven yet, but I guarantee if you open up the exhaust down the road, you're going to wish you did it from the start.
