I'm taking the 'Vette back down to the track this Thursday.....but I won't be going alone :). I was challenged by a kid that lives near me. He has a '02 ZO6 Corvette and "wants to see what my '76 'Vette has." This should be a pretty intense race (that I will get on video). I de-jetted my carburetor (thanks for the help Curtis), removed the choke tower from the carburetor, cut my L88 hood out for cowl induction and am waiting for the Strip Dominator intake which should be arriving tomorrow.
Once I have the engine back together, my buddy is going to come over and we are going to hook a timing light up to it. I'm going to check my valves again, thank God I have rubber valve cover gaskets they have saved me a lot of money in the long run. I'll probably add some lead tetra-ethel (boosts octane to about 104) before we set the timing. I'm going to see if I can borrow my buddy's Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires for the night to aid my traction problems.
I asked the guys in the "Kill Section" what the '02 ZO6 runs down the 1/4 mile. They said that stock they run mid-low 12s with the possibility of high 11s :cry. Frankly I'm worried. I've been hearing it from my friends that "I don't stand a chance." I'm out to prove them wrong.
The ZO6 that I'll be running against is all stock with the stock tires on it. Any advice would be appreciated! Wish me luck :D .
A 2002 Z06 is a mean animal. not only are they powefull but they are also light. I have no doubt that your engine in proper tune can make more power, the question is whether you can make up the weight difference and traction difference. Drag racing is all about power to weight to traction. Try racing for best MPH rather the ET, since MPH is a better idication of actual rear wheel power and you should have an advantage in this area.
69 Ratt:
I found 11s hard to believe, but I don't know too much about the new ZO6s.
Pat:
I believe the new ZO6s weigh in around 3,150lbs or so. My car weighs in at 3,220lbs with 3/4 tank of gas. So he doesn't have me by much....maybe .05 of a second in the 1/4 if I run with 1/4 tank of gas.
For the record, I'll be running open headers again so at least he'll have trouble hearing his car :D
I've driven an '02 Z06 and it's pretty quick, BUT I think if you borrow the "sticky mickey's" you will NOT have a problem what so ever. What ever you do get it on TAPE. :D
For what it's worth the Z06 "comes alive " in 3rd gear.
The 02 ZO6 is rated at 405hp, right? It should be a good race. Driver skill will be a big factor with both cars. What the heck is this "kid" doing with an 02 ZO6????
Bence, Good luck, but no shame in loosing if it plays out that way. The other car has, what.. $30k on you?? MJ
1. Be sure to test that jetting before going to the track
2. Those pistons like 36 total timing with that combo.
3. Let him stage first, then start making some noise behind him-shake him up a little
4. When the guy stages, have some chick run up to his car and pull her t-shirt up
I probably know the least about a Z06 than anyone on the forum but a 2001 automatic C5 runs mid to low 13's every time I have seen him run down here
If he out runs you,so what? Nothing a Fogger system and a new cam won't take care of over winter :D

Re: Wish Me Luck! (bence13_33)
Good Luck! All you can do is your best. There's always another day.
Maybe mention to the kid that you heard that if he's caught racing his ZO6 that his warranty would be void. And how some dealerships attend & photograph ZO6's at the track to prove their point. It ain't like the 'ol days.
OK, let's combine the 2 best elements of those last 2 suggestions. Have a young lady print in block letters on her chest: RACING VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY. Then have her run up to your opponent's car as he stages, lift her teeshirt, and press her message against the driverside window!!
He still has to drive it. I have seen Z06 cars run from low 12s to high 14s. The 14s was with a BAD driver. If he is not very experienced you should take him. The Z06 is a fast car in the hands of the right driver.
well i was just going to say not to worry to much about this dude. most of the drivers suck at the track. i see z06s run mid to high 13s in those cars. If he has been to the track a few times, you may have your hands full.
