This is going to be tough to put into words but I will give a try.... I had the car in to get a fuel pump replaced and when I picked it up I noticed that when I turned it over to start it I heard a sound that I haven't heard before that sounds almost like something is slapping the fan blades as I try and start it. I mentioned it to the mechanic and he said he didn't touch anything but the fuel pump. I am thinking maybe the starter (which is brand new last summer) or maybe the flywheel? It sounds like metal on metal ..... Any ideas?

If you only hear the noise when you start the Vet I would agree it's something to do with the starter.
Could be the bendix spring is not returning or the solenoid is on the way out.
I would take it in to a good shop and put it up in the air and let them start it up
If it's the starter then you will know for sure
My starter was not disengaging and made a similar noise.
Good luck
Did you check and see if the fan blades are hitting the shroud (just turn it by hand). The starter bolts could also be a little lose and causing the starter to bind or it is not shimmed properly and just now showing up.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. I will take a closer look at the starter

Thank you for the reply, I did check the fan and also just grabbed at the starter, it seemed tight, but I will get a wrench on it to make sure
