1979 L48 stock 40,000 miles. Runs great at normal driving speeds. Just came from a trip on 75 mph xway. Temp 85 deg. after exiting E-way at any speed runs great but when it is accelerated with full throttle at aprox 4,000 rpm engine shuts down 100% no backfires etc. just as if you shut the key off, when it slows to aprox. 2000 rpm it will restart and run up to aprox 4,000 and then repeat. Yet when you shut it of it will start and run as new??
Checked and replaced fuel filter. (not blocked) after adding 19 gal of fuel it seemed to correct its self I don't think I could have been sucking air from the remaining fuel being pushed to the rear of the tank. Do you? . Replaced coil, cap, rotor last year but not the orig. ignition module. Will the module do this from heat or could it be the new coil or GOD FORBID the fuel pump? Module and pump are OEM from when car was built. Carb was rebuilt last summer.
Fuel pumps give warnings before crapping out. Modules or coils just die completely. In rare occasions a coil or module will come back to life when they cool off but it's very rare.
Replaced the fuel pump this A.M. 250mi trip this Sat. Will see. A note if you do it, the pump I bought was classed as a Premium pump what ever that is. Besure to save the 90 deg. fitting from the old pump, You will need it! The can where the pipes hook up is longer than the stock AC so the new S hose to the tank won't fit ( about 1/2 in to short) without repositioning the fuel line. Can be done but it's a pain!.
Had to do it from above and pull one spark plug wire for room. Note on the push rod, remove the backup plate from under the pump face and wipe the oil off the rod. It will then stay in the up pos. till you get the pump back on. Tried the grease thing and it wouldn't stay up long enough. You will need a 3/8 extension at least a foot long to access the pump bolts from the wheel well with a 7/16 socket after the wheel is removed. Total cost was aprox. $60.00 and 3 hours.. Better than $400.00 incl labor!!!

Reason: additions
At first I was going to say you are out of gas if you put 19 gallons in it, but looks like the 79 has a larger tank than my 76. As others have said most likely the fuel pump. If it continues, could be the the fuel tank sock.
