After reading that post and all the related documents I went out and changed the advance springs in my distributor, connected the vacuum to manifold source, mapped out the advance curve and the amount added by both vacuum and mechanical advance. It can be fun.
I would post back some specifics of your situation.
Are you looking for the GM initial spec? Perhaps to pass an inspection or something?
Are you wanting to increase performance?
What have you done already as far as modifications?
What distributor do you use?
Where do you have the vacuum can connected?
Are you using the Qjet?
There is a sweet spot. Less initial can make it easier to start and can increase temps in the exhaust. You may want that to pass an emission test. On the other hand, more initial can help smooth an idle, may unlock some performance but can also run the risk of harder starting.
I am no expert but enjoy tweaking. I would imagine that an initial of 12-16 would be a good start.
Enjoy the process on this one.
