The NCRS Judging Guide says the code will be 1-9 for January through September or an alpha O, N, or D for October, November, or December. Next two digits are day of the month. Last digit is calendar year.
If there is a fifth digit, it indicates shift.
The alternator can be dated after the engine assembly date.
How strange. The NCRS pocket guide, page 123 says year first, then either a letter or digit for the month, then two digits for the day of the month. Here's a post from Joe Lucia from 2003
If the judging guide takes precedence, then the alternator in question would be September 11 1979. If that's the case, then this is a good fit for a car built in November 1979.
There again- what do I know, I have a head shaped like an alternator.

Thanks Mike, so the picture I posted with a 9119 date code would be September 11th 1979?
