You may need to adjust/tighten the dimmer switch located on the bottom of the column under the dash. A rod runs the length of the column from the turn signal lever to the switch. It may have come loose over the last 35+ years.

I checked the play in the tilt column and it seem to be tight. when you move it into different positions it locks in. but the tilt lever parts that I can see are sloppy back and forth. is this something that can be tightened up. I will look on the bottom of the column to see if the dimmer needs adjusting. since my wiper / turn signals/ and dimmer are all on the same lever is there just one replacement part or several for each function? thanks

The dimmer switch is near the bottom of the column. You might need to tighten up on it a little bit, however, do you really care if it is not working at max height? Do you use it up there?

Dimmer switch has adjustment for mechanical travel,
loosen and adjust until it works in desired location, lock it back down.

the dimmer switch is actually located on the top side,
right next to the iginition switch, you probable need to lower the column to access.
lossen bolts, and slide the switch towards the steering wheel.
