th400 issues
When I got the engine started the shifter was in park, but the transmission was in reverse. Not a good feeling. Before doing anything I had run the shifter down the gears thinking I was feeling each one. Obviously I was not. Is this a linkage issue I can correct?
The guy who rebuilt the transmission told me to put 1/2 a quart to a full quart in the converter before putting it on the transmission. Then when I got ready add 7 quarts of transmission fluid before I even thought about looking.
I did as he said and the transmission kept burping out fluid once it got hot. It showed to be way overfull. I did what he said as far as getting the convertor on and even tried a few times before actually having it in the car.
It's all shut down for the night and try again later. Frustrating to see all my work have such a crappy finale.

it is a common problem of not seating the converter fully, no clue about the reverse issue.

Here's what we did for decades at the trans. shop I worked at.
No fluid added to converter. Just a little fluid on hub to lube seal.
Pour 4 in quarts while engine off.
Start engine, wheels off ground, in park.
Immediately add 4 more quarts... check it.. add till full.
While vehicle level, place selector in each gear and run through gears.
Re-check fluid level.
th350 holds about 10 qts., th400 holds 11-12 qts.
If it's burping fluid out while you're trying to add it below 10-11 qt. total while running, that sounds like an internal pressure loss most likely and prob. needs to come back out. The reverse issue (and poss. burping issue) could be the way the selector valve is loaded on the pin on the linkage (in the wrong groove). I hope the builder has built these before and will stand behind his/her work. TH400 one of the easiest to build IMO, hope you get it fixed.... good luck.
